Conference Background and Agenda

Virginia

  • The Supreme Court of Virginia's Pro Se Litigants Task Force issued a report recommending that a committee to study the unbundling of legal services be established. This committee was set up by the Virginia State Bar and had met twice as of October, 2003.

  • According to Ethics Counsel, James M. McCawley, the Virginia State Bar is generally supportive of expanding the role of unbundled legal services. In the summer of 2003, it filed an amicus brief in support of the appellant in the case of Walker v. American Association of Professional Eye Care Specialists. At issue is a circuit court holding that a motion for judgment signed and filed by the appellant was invalid as a matter of law because it was drafted by an attorney not representing her. The case is currently (as of October, 2003) before the Supreme Court of Virginia.
